Kiwanis Club of Redlands Foundation
The
Kiwanis Club of Redlands has long been involved in helping
college and university students by providing scholarships
to help offset the costs of continuing their education.
The
Scholarship Foundation was formally established in 1981
with the help of long time members: Urban Derkum, Luther
Holden, attorney Ed Hales, and many others. It was
incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit.
The first scholarship provided by the new foundation
was named the Rich Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. Rich
was a club member and an outstanding community member
{renowned for performing children's puppet shows} who had just
lost a courageous fight against cancer.
Ellen
Schaunaman of Redlands High School helped the Foundation to
establish the criteria used to select scholarship
recipients based on scholastic record, participation in
school and community activities, and clear goals for the
future.
Each
spring, three scholarships are awarded to graduating
students at Redlands High School, Redlands East Valley High
School and one at Grove High School. Since the first scholarship was awarded, scholarships
totaling in excess of $452,000 have been provided to local
high school graduates.
The Foundation is looking forward to adding
additional scholarships when the new Citrus Valley High
School has its first graduating class in 2012.
In
addition, Challenge Grants are awarded at Orangewood High
School and Redlands Adult School.
The Martin and Dorothy Munz COMPACT Scholarship is
awarded at Redland High School.
Donations to the
Foundation for scholarships are welcome at any time. You
are invited to become a member of the Foundation
Legacy Circle.
