Photoshop Elements users will be happy because Larry is the featured instructor
at Kelby Training for Photoshop Elements 9, and he'll even cover some techniques
for Elements users. So plan to join us for Larry's visit. You're sure to get
some fast and powerful processing tips and your images and sales will both be
looking better.
The program on February

will feature photographer, David McChesney on a return visit. In addition to
being a noted wildlife photographer, David is an advanced photography instructor
at the Desert Institute in Joshua Tree. He is an accomplished musician who goes
by the nickname of “Hurricane Dave”
David’s love of nature
must be in his genes since his roots go back to naturalist, John Muir. His
website is aptly named “outmywindows.com” since it is through the windows of
his home in Joshua Tree that David has taken some of the images you will see in
his presentation, “Mojave Desert: Mile of Wonder.” But his photographs are
definitely not limited to his backyard! His book “Miles of Wonder includes
over 500 photographs of Joshua Tree, Death Valley, the Mojave Preserve and
beyond. David will share some of the photos from his book with us.

grown to include over 300 participants of all ages who
learn circus skills in classes held at the YMCA from September through
April. Small performances are given throughout the year before a variety
of audiences, but our end-of-season show, held in Coble Gym at the

our crowning glory. This year's shows are scheduled as follows:

in Redlands. Sessions are from 8:30am to 2:30pm, and the cost is $155 per
person per week ($135 for museum members). Extended camps are also available

Growing Up Serrano:
June 20 to 24, or July 25 to 29.
Experience many of the
traditional activities of our local Serrano Indians, including children’s
toys and games, tool-making, hunting skills, food, clothing, houses, trading,
basket-weaving, and stories. Campers will be able to bring home tools, toys,
and materials used during camp at the end of the session. Families are invited
to attend a camp “pow-wow” on Friday from 1:30 to 2:30pm.
More Animals Around
Us: June 27 to July 1
Explore the diversity
of animal life in our urban environment. Which animals like to live near
humans and which avoid us? Which animals make good pets and which don’t?
Campers will meet some local residents up close and observe other from a
distance. On Friday from 1:30 to 2:30pm, the families of campers are invited
to attend a “Celebration of Animals.”
Playing With History:
July 11 to 15
Did kids have fun 500
years ago? Was it different 200 or even 100 years ago? Learn about the first
people who lived here and the Spanish and American settlers who expanded into
this area. Find out how your grandparents lived in the 20th century. At the
end of the week, campers’ families will join campers from 1:30 to 2:30pm for
a “Historic Celebration.”
Art and Nature: July
18 to 22
Art is all around us,
especially in the world of nature. Campers will study nature closely and learn
about color, line, patterns, and more. Nature will be the inspiration, and
provide materials for some artworks. At 1:30pm on Friday, the families of
campers are invited to attend an “Artists’ Reception” to share the art
that the young artists have produced.
Grandma’s Attic:
July 6, 7, and 8
A half-day summer camp
is available for children ages 4 to 7 accompanied by an adult. This three-day
mini camp will take campers into a simpler time, when kids made their own fun
and imagination ruled. Children and their special adults will gather in the
imaginary attic to play with old-fashioned toys and games together, learn
about animals, and more. Each parent, grandparent, or adult may bring up to
three children to the camp and play alongside with them. The camp will be from
8:30am to noon. The cost is $75 per child and $65 for museum members. Adults

 | "The Mojave River in the Ice
Ages"
On Sunday, May 8,
Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will explore the fossil record of the
ancient Mojave Desert in a lecture, “Waters of Life: The Mojave River in
the Ice Ages,” at 2pm at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley. This
presentation is included with paid museum admission.
The present-day
Mojave River flows north and east, mostly underground, to pass through
Hesperia, Victorville and Barstow on its way towards Baker. “During the
Pleistocene Epoch—the ‘Ice Ages’—global and regional temperatures
were frequently cooler than today, and the ancestral Mojave River flowed
at the surface along most of its length, fed by more runoff from
year-round snow and ice blanketing the San Bernardino and San Gabriel
Mountains,” said Scott.
“The ancestral
Mojave River filled low-lying basins north and east of the mountains to
form broad freshwater lakes,” Scott continued. “Abundant plants and
animals, including several extinct species of very large mammals, all
thrived on this ready source of fresh water. In the Victor Valley region,
ancient river sediments laid down by the ancestral Mojave River are still
present, and preserve the fossilized remains of extinct animals such as
mammoths, horses, camels, sloths, and even giant bears. The ground under
your feet is a rich treasure trove of bones and teeth of Ice Age animals
that once called this area home!”
This lecture will be
of special interest to visitors who plan to attend a field trip led by
Scott, “Mojave River and Lake Manix,” which leaves from the Victor
Valley Museum on Saturday, May 14. Trip participants must pre-register.
The Victor Valley
Museum is at 11873 Apple Valley Road in Apple Valley. Admission is $5
(adult), $4 (senior or military), and $2.50 (student). Children under 5
and San Bernardino County Museum Association members are free. Parking is
free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive
listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to
participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made
through Museum Visitor Services at (760) 240-2111 at least three business
days prior to your visit.

Event:
View the Moon and Saturn
The public is
invited to celebrate Astronomy Day at the San Bernardino County Museum on
Saturday, May 14 with the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers. This
event is open to the public free of charge.
From 7 to 8pm, the
general club meeting will be open to the public. From 8 to 9pm, the public
will be able to view the gibbous moon and Saturn through the club
members’ telescopes.
“The moon will
be a nice waxing gibbous with Saturn not too far from it,” said Chris
Clarke, program coordinator for the San Bernardino Valley Amateur
Astronomers. “Saturn’s rings will be tipped open more than last year
when they were quite thin in appearance. The rings always give the planet
a three-dimensional appearance that delights and astounds first-time
viewers. The moon will have all manner of detail to show, with vast lava
flows, gigantic craters, and mountains, all standing out in stark detail
along the terminator, or shadow line.”
Several sizes and
types of telescopes will be set up by club members, ranging from
refractors to reflectors to compound optics. This is a wonderful
opportunity for the public to see two of the most visually stunning
objects in the heavens through a variety of telescopes. The telescopes
will be set up at the south end of the parking lot.
The
San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from
Interstate 10 in Redlands. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.

 | Celebrating Public
Works
|
Have you ever wondered
who designs and builds our roads and bridges? Come to the San Bernardino County
Museum on Saturday, May 14 from 11am to 5pm, and learn everything about public
works in “Public Works: Serving You and Your Community.” Organized by the
San Bernardino County Public Works Department, this event is included with paid

the tens of thousands of men and women in North American who provide and
maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works.
Visitors will be able to
design, construct, and experiment with structures they engineer and build
themselves with employees from the County Department of Public Works on hand to
help. Families can design a foil boat, create a glider, build a toothpick
bridge, explore with the storm drain robot and take pictures with the giant
snowblower. Solid Waste Management and San Bernardino County Surveyor will have
their equipment for demonstrations, and Environmental Management will also be
onsite with an enviroscape.

 | Field trip, "Mojave River and Lake Manix" |
On Saturday, May 14,
Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will lead a day trip into the Mojave Desert
to see evidence of the ancient Mojave River and Pleistocene Lake Manix.
Departing from the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley, this trip is organized
by the San Bernardino County Museum Association, and reservations are required
by May 6.
“This trip is an
opportunity to travel back in time and envision the Mojave Desert as it appeared
more than ten thousand years ago,” said Scott. “During the Pleistocene Epoch—the
‘Ice Ages’— the area now known as the Mojave Desert was populated by an
amazing variety of strange and wonderful large mammals. These great beasts
visited the ancestral Mojave River and Lake Manix frequently during the
Pleistocene, making use of the abundant fresh water and its attendant forage.
Early humans are interpreted by some to have inhabited the region towards the
latter part of the last Ice Age, but the evidence for these ancient peoples is
far more inconclusive.”
Scott will lead
participants along portions of the Mojave River drainage to the ancient
shoreline of Lake Manix, exploring the ancient lake beds. The trip will then
proceed to the Afton Canyon region to see where the ancient lake drained away
thousands of years ago. Scott will discuss fossils of extinct animals and the
geology of the region, relating the Lake Manix site to other localities
throughout the Mojave Desert.
Participants will leave
the museum at 8am and return at about 5pm. Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for
moderate to strenuous hikes. The cost of $50 per person ($40 for Museum
Association members) includes transportation and snacks. Participants are to
bring their own lunches. Space is limited, and pre-paid registration is required
by May 6, 2011. Call Melissa Sanchez at (909) 307-2669 ext. 250 or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org
for more information.
Related to the trip, Scott
will also present a lecture, “Waters of Life: the Mojave River in the Ice
Ages,” at the Victor Valley Museum on Sunday, May 8 at 2pm. The lecture is
included with paid museum admission.
Part of the San Bernardino
County Museum’s system, the Victor Valley Museum is at 11873 Apple Valley Road

 | Teen Book Club at the Museum |
A
new book reading club for teens will meet for the first time at the San
Bernardino County Museum on Tuesday June 14, at 4pm. Organized by the Education
Division, the group will discuss “The House of the Scorpion” by Nancy
Farmer, and this discussion is free to the public.
“Teens
love to read, and often have novel ideas to complement the stories they like,”
said Curator of Education Jolene Redvale. “This is an opportunity for kids to
share what they liked and didn’t like about the book, and to talk more about
the subject with others.”
This
book tells a story about Matt, who grows up isolated in a house amid the poppy
fields. He does not know he is a clone until he breaks free of his early
caregiver. “Teens like this kind of story because it allows them to use their
imaginations in a variety of ways,” continued Redvale. “It incorporates
science, relationships, and a bit of fantasy. I hope teens will want to
participate, even if they haven’t read the book yet. Sometimes, after hearing
others talk about it, you want to rush out and get the book yourself. That’s
what happened with me when I heard about this book!”
Open
to everyone and free of charge, the club will read books on a wide range of
subjects that appeal to readers age 13-18. Topics will vary and participants
will have the opportunity to suggest titles for future meetings. Parents are
encouraged to help their teens decide if a book will interest them. For more
information, contact Redvale at (909) 307-2559 ext. 252 or jredvale@sbcm.sbcounty.gov.

Menu
Magic: Setting up your camera to give you the features you want, when
you want them
It’s
no secret that today’s digital wonder-cameras can have a bewildering array of
modes, options and custom functions. The trick is not only knowing what they do,
but how to access them quickly when needed. In this hands-on workshop we’ll
get to the heart of Menus, Custom Functions and “mystery buttons” to give
you the ability to get the most from your particular camera model. Bring your
camera(s) and their instruction manual(s). Jot down those nagging questions you
haven’t been able to find answers for. After a general discussion that applies
to digital cameras regardless of brand and type, we’ll form smaller groups to
focus on brand-specific issues.
Come
to this workshop, and you’ll leave better prepared to use your camera with
confidence. Mastery of your camera’s technical side will free you up to
concentrate on creating artistic masterpieces.
The
workshop will be conducted at the Club’s regular meeting place, the Redlands
United Church of Christ, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on July 25, 2011. All Redlands
Camera Club members are eligible to attend. Join the Redlands Camera Club ($25
individual annual membership) and unlock the secrets to your camera’s menu.
Advance registration is required by going to the RCC website and using PayPal to
pay the $10 fee.

Art, for Heaven’s Sake!
Is a three day annual art festival held on the beautiful
grounds and gardens of the Redlands
United Church of Christ. This premiere art festival of the Inland Empire
features 60 plus artists representing a wide variety of media, including
acrylics, photography, watercolor, oils, stained glass, jewelry, pottery, and
metal sculpture. The Redlands United Church of Christ holds this event to
support the arts and the community.
From the first festival and sale held in a private home and
featuring five local artists, the festival has grown to accommodate over sixty
artists. Although many selected artists are still local, over the years, the
reputation of the festival has spread, resulting in submissions from artists
from all over the Western states.
The art festival committee selects the best of the submissions
and strives to include fine art representing a wide range of media. Admittance
to the festival is free. A percentage of the art sales goes to the church. The
proceeds have in the past been used to support church building projects, the
church’s handbell choir, the Family Service Association, and Food for All.
Part of the proceeds from the 2005 festival was used to donate $7,000 to
hurricane relief for the city of Lafitte, Louisiana.
Festival schedule for 2011:
Friday, Oct. 14, 7 pm – 10 pm

Fellowship
of Christian Athletes Inland Empire Kicks off First Fundraising Event
The
Fellowship of Christian Athletes Inland Empire (FCA) is holding their
2011 Home Team Drive
and Breakfast on Saturday November 12, 2011 at 8:00 am at the Redlands Country
Club.
While the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is fairly new to the
Inland Empire
(began 2004), it was founded in 1954 and has been impacting lives nationally
for over fifty years. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in
America
and its mission is “To present to coaches and athletes and all whom they
influence the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and
Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the
church.”
The event on November 12th is themed “Above
and Beyond: Expanding the Reach.” The
program will include stories of how the ministry is reaching kids in our local
community. Tom Randall will be the
keynote speaker. Tom serves as
Chaplain for the PGA Champions Tour. He
and his wife Karen have served as missionaries in the
Philippines
for many years, starting four orphanages and adopting many orphans into their
family. Attendees will also find
out more about how they can get involved in supporting the financial needs of
FCA and be introduced to the Dave Stephens Scholarship Fund, which will raise
funds for FCA camp scholarships.
FCA IE board member Teddy Skipper, co-owner of Christian Motors, stated “of
the potential 88 schools in our local area, we have active FCA huddles or team
Bible studies on 16 of those campuses. We
obviously need more resources to reach additional teens.
Board member Cathy Bates, owner of Practical Solutions, grew up with
FCA in the South where it is well established.
“I’m excited to see it expanding now in the
Inland Empire
. I’ve seen the positive
differences it makes in the lives of teens.”
Other board members include David Maupin of Maupin Financial Services,
John Mills of InterWoven Inc, Jeff Harman of Christian Motors, and Chris Toth
an engineer at a local aerospace contractor.
