NoticeRedlands Camera Club to Hold Special Meeting on Monday, July 7 The club, one of the oldest and largest photography groups in the west, will have two special events and an excellent illustrated program at its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Redlands’ United Church of Christ. The program will be by Dan Griffith, an outstanding landscape and still life photographer of San Bernardino. He has chosen his work in Joshua Tree National Park as the subject for this presentation. Dan's photographic explorations of Joshua Tree National Park have been going on now for nearly twenty years. He has gained a great understanding of the light that falls upon that landscape and has mastered capturing it. Come and enjoy his outstanding color, black and white, and infrared images of the Park. The photographs will be projected in high resolution on a twelve-foot screen The results of the 2008 Print Competition will be announced at this meeting, with presentation of awards and viewing of the winning images. The club will conduct a silent auction of a large number of photographic equipment items, open to the public as well as club members. It will feature cameras, lenses, and a wide range of photo accessories of many kinds. Opening bids have been set below prevailing prices, so there will be bargains for the bidding. Accepted for payment will be cash and checks. Non-members’ checks must be preprinted with a valid local address, and valid photo ID showing the same local address must be presented. This meeting presents unusual opportunities for the photographic enthusiast a great program, award-winning photographs, and auction bargains – the perfect combination! The meeting location is the Redlands United Church of Christ, 168 Bellevue (at W. Olive Ave.) in Redlands. To learn more about the Redlands Camera Club, go online to www.redlandscameraclub.com
NoticeColton Crossing Hearing set for 5 to 8 p.m., June 26 by California State Assembly Select Committee on Inland Empire Transportation Issues at 650 N. La Cadena Drive in Colton. One hour of car idling burns about a gallon of gas. So when traffic is stalled at railroad crossings, dollars and time are wasted, and the air is polluted. The possibility of a project that will reduce traffic congestion near Colton Crossing -- the intersection of some of the busiest rail lines in the nation -- will be discussed at an informational hearing at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26. How the project might be funded and how it will affect the Colton area community will be a focus of the Colton City Hall hearing hosted by California State Assembly Select Committee on Inland Empire Transportation Issues and chaired by District 62 Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto). The address is 650 N. La Cadena Drive in Colton. "The grade separation project could benefit our community, but may also affect many residents in a negative way," said Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter. "I want to have a forum where the railroad companies and government agencies can listen to concerns from the public and involve them in examining the issues." Earlier this year, opportunities to fund the project at the Colton Crossing were approved. It will separate the rail lines so that rail traffic can move quickly through the region, saving travel time for trains and cars that would otherwise have to wait for slow moving locomotives to pass at crossings. An opportunity for public comment will follow brief presentations from Union Pacific Railroad, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, Caltrans, and San Bernardino Associated Governments. For information, contact the District Office of Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter at (909) 820-5008.
NoticeJohn Jorgenson Quintet at University of Redlands Greek Theater. Music begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission $25 ($12.50 Children). The John Jorgenson Quintet features guitarist and Redlands native John Jorgenson, a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, the Hellecasters, and six-year member of Elton John's band. Artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have sought out Jorgenson's guitar work. Recently, John Jorgenson was chosen to portray Django Reinhardt in the feature film Head in the Clouds. John Jorgenson is known as one of the pioneers of the American gypsy jazz movement. He has performed as a solo artist as well as collaborated with other musicians all over the world. His articles and lessons on gypsy jazz have appeared in prominent guitar magazines and he has given master classes around the country, and he has performed with some of the most respected European proponents of this style, Bireli Lagrene and Romane. His playing has been included on a CD with Babik Reinhardt and Jimmy Rosenberg, and on another featuring Angelo Debarre and Moreno. In 1988 Curb Records released Jorgenson's After You've Gone CD, a collection of Django Reinhardt and Benny Goodman-styled 30's swing. At a John Jorgenson Quintet performance, audiences are amazed by John's dazzling guitar work as well as his mastery as a clarinet player and vocalist. Whether playing his own accessible compositions or classic standards, John and his band make music that is equally romantic and ecstatic, played with virtuosity and soul. For more information visit http://www.redlands.edu/x36072.xml and www.johnjorgenson.com The June 21st concert will feature both festival and lawn seating. Picnicking is available. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Music begins at 7:30 p.m. Free parking. For directions, information on parking and to purchase tickets visit: ticketmaster.com.
